A long incision is made across your abdomen so that the liver can be accessed. The size along with the location of the incision is dependent upon the anatomy along with the approach of the surgeon. The blood supply to the liver is cut off along with the bile ducts and this includes the damaged liver. Then the donor’s liver is placed in your body, followed by the bile ducts and the blood vessels being reattached. Normally the surgery tends to take close to 12 hours and this depends upon the situation.

Once the new liver is in place the surgeon goes on to use staples so that the surgical incision is closed. Then you are asked to head over to the ICU so that the process of recovery begins.

In case if the liver is provided from a living donor, the surgeons are going to plant a portion of the donor’s liver on to your body. The surgeons first go on to operate on the donor whereby the portion of the liver needed for transplant is removed. Then they go on to remove the diseased liver and place the proper liver in the body. Then the bile ducts along with blood vessels are connected to the new liver as well.

The transplanted liver is going to function normally in a matter of few days.
